Her career began in the 80s before coming to popularity with her role in the Tezaab film, in which she was a part of the cast alongside veteran actor Anil Kapoor. Her next film was the film Dil in which she starred alongside Aamir Khan. Her birthplace was in a Mumbai middle-class family, and started dancing at a young age. Early in her life, as she began to perform as an actress, most films she created weren't successful. Then she found her feet and went on to become one of the top actors within the Indian film business. She took a break from her career after her wedding before returning to the entertainment industry. In the last few years, Dixit had a major role to play on Gulaab Gang a movie about the struggles of women in India. Dixit was awarded fifteen Filmfare Awards nominations, of which eight she won. Dixit was also awarded her Padma Shri the fourth highest civilian honor in India. She also has a reputation for her social activism.
